CAVITY WALL INSULATION

What actually is cavity wall insulation and how is it free?

What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government scheme to help people insulate their homes, make them more energy efficient and save money on their energy bills. It covers free of charge and partly funded insulation measures to properties in the UK.

Who qualifies for free Cavity Wall Insulation?

You qualify for cavity wall insulation if you are a homeowner, your property is in council tax band A, B, C or D and your EPC rating is a D, E, F or G

We can also review your eligibility for other insulation measures.

What is Cavity Wall Insulation?

Cavity wall insulation is a method of insulating your home by filling the space, or “cavity,” between two layers of brickwork in external walls. Homes built with cavity walls—usually those constructed after the 1920s—have this gap to help reduce heat transfer. By filling the cavity with insulation material, like Energy Store Superbead, we create an insulating barrier that significantly reduces heat loss.

This insulation prevents warm air from escaping and cold air from entering, helping your home stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Effective cavity wall insulation leads to better energy efficiency, lower heating bills, and a more comfortable living environment.

Why should I have cavity wall insulation?

With up to 35% of a home’s heat being lost through uninsulated walls, insulating a cavity wall is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing your heating bills and improving internal comfort.

A typical home will save an average of £250 a year on their heating bills following the installation of cavity wall insulation.

How do you check my home is suitable, what is the process?

  1. Survey with Edge Energy Assessor

  2. They will determine whether you are likely to be eligible for Cavity Wall Insulation and whether your property is likely to be suitable

  3. Survey with specialise Cavity Wall Surveyor

  4. They will drill small unobtrusive holes in the wall and use a borescope to check the cavity is suitable

  5. Installation booked

What happens on the day of the installation?

On the day of the installation the cavity wall insulation team will arrive, drill holes in the mortar joints of the external wall. They inject the Superbead Insulation into the wall using specialist equipment. The bead fills the cavity space to create a continuous insulation layer. Once complete we seal the drill holes with matching mortar ensuring the exterior of your home looks as it did before installation. The whole process is quick, clean and usually complete within a day.

I’ve heard Cavity Wall Insulation can cause issues?

It’s true that some older cavity wall insulation systems have received negative attention. However, these issues generally stem from two main sources: poor installation practices or using materials that weren’t suitable for the property’s location or condition. At Edge Energy Performance Company, we’re committed to making sure that doesn’t happen.

Our team installs Energy Store Superbead insulation, a high-quality product specifically designed to minimize issues like dampness. Unlike traditional insulation materials such as mineral wool or foam, Superbead consists of tiny, water-resistant beads that don’t absorb moisture. This makes it a safer choice, especially for properties exposed to the UK’s variable weather.

Before we install any insulation, we conduct a thorough assessment of your property to confirm suitability. This careful approach, combined with the 25-year guarantee that comes with Superbead, means you can have confidence that your home will stay warm, dry, and protected.

With Edge Energy, you’re in safe hands for a cavity wall insulation solution that’s designed to last and perform effectively for years to come.
